CULTURE CORNER: Mark Syroney, Publisher

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself – where you live, about your family, what you did before DE?

A: My family and I live in Medina, Ohio which is about 30 miles southwest of Cleveland. I’ve been married to my wife and best friend Danielle for 16 years (actually 17 years as our anniversary is on 8/29/25). Danielle is also my Content Facilitator for both of my magazines which are the Portage Lakes Parish Neighbors and Brunswick + Medina Parish Neighbors. We have two boys. Our son Adam is 13, plays football, basketball, electric and acoustic guitar (self-taught) and my son Christian is 11, plays soccer, drums, and the piano (also self-taught). Before DE, I spent 20+ years working for different non-profit organizations in executive level administration, raising millions of dollars for capital campaigns, endowment and scholarship campaigns, new programs, operational needs, etc. I also was in charge of marketing, media buying, events, etc.

Q: How long have you been at DE and what brought you here?

A: I’ve been with DE just shy of two years. I was miserable for the last several years in having to manage large staffs, volunteer boards, intense fundraising pressure, etc. that I was asking God to lead me to someplace that is faith-based and where I can do work for Him. God answered by leading me to DE.

Q: Who is your favorite saint and why?

A: St. Michael the Archangel. In my life, there have been moments where either I have been around the wrong people or in bad situations. Even recently, I have felt the enemy trying to attack me from not wanting me to do this work for DE or create fear and doubt in this work. It is St. Michael I have called on to protect me. When I feel threatened or things are not going the right way, I pray to St. Michael to defend and protect me which he always does. Plus, the Catholic school I attended as a child was St. Michael the Archangel so that helped pave the way for a strong relationship with him.

Q: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?

A: I really want to travel to Israel and walk where Jesus walked, sit where Jesus and the disciples sat, and take in the land where Jesus lived. My wife is 100% Italian and sometime in our lifetime we need to visit Italy too.

Q: What advice would you have for someone new joining the DE team?

A: You are going to feel deflated and discouraged a lot, especially when you are first starting your business. Trust the process, follow what you learned in training and reach out to your RA and other publishers and AEs around the country for advice and encouragement. Stay the course and it will reward you back.

Q: What is your favorite Title of Mary?

A: Blessed Mother

Q: What do you love most about DE?

A: Everyone is on the same boat…some are in different sections of the boat based on roles, experiences, years w/ DE, etc., but all are on the same boat heading in the right direction. The folks at DE are all warm, encouraging, and thoughtful and are always willing to help you.
